Unfortunately, whenever we burn fossil fuels (like petrol and diesel) to power cars, trucks, trains, planes or ships, we\u2019re adding to climate pollution. Moving by shared, active and electric transport is a cleaner, healthier way of travelling from A to B.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-red-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/resources\/seize-the-decade\/\" style=\"border-radius:97px\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find our full plan to seize the decade and download the report here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/17287523\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where are we at?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passenger transport is dominated by cars in Australia, with public transport only accounting for around 7% of total passenger travel, and rolling, walking or bike riding less than 4%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Polluting cars dominate most personal travel, with uptake of electric vehicles held back by a lack of fuel efficiency standards.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electric vehicles have become popular in Australia, with new electric vehicle sales jumping to almost 9% of new vehicles in 2023 &#8211; more than double the rate of growth compared to the previous year. Despite this, Australia lags behind comparable countries because we have been slow to introduce standards that encourage manufacturers to sell more low- and zero-emission vehicles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Road transport is also a significant source of air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. These air pollutants are associated with numerous adverse health effects, primarily respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and are linked to more than 11,000 premature deaths in Australia each year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Transport in 2024:<\/strong><\/td><td>Pollutes 102 Mt CO<sub>2<\/sub>e (expected 2024)<\/td><td>Makes up 22% of national emissions<\/td><td>Increased its climate pollution by 24% since 2005<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By shifting to shared, active and electrified transport, we can halve climate pollution in our transport sector, from 102 Mt CO<sub>2<\/sub>e in 2024 to 45.3 Mt CO<sub>2<\/sub>e in 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/17057291\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What else can we do<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We can halve transport pollution by providing better travel options to people who live in our biggest cities, and by moving goods in ways that pollute less so we can all breathe easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Boost shared and active travel:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shift existing kilometres travelled by private car to shared and active transport at a rate of about 5% a year and create healthier communities in the process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>States and territory government can support significant improvements to our transport options by:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing fast, frequent and reliable shared transport services, by ensuring shared transport services operate at least every 15 minutes within 800 metres of every home from 7am to 7pm across Australia\u2019s eight capital cities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This starts with delivering better bus services by 2030.
