The Federal Government is due to set Australia’s 2035 climate target by September – a decision that will shape the future of every Australian.

A stronger target will keep Australians safer from climate disasters like floods, fires and heatwaves, unlock economic opportunities in clean industries, and enhance our regional security.

A weaker target means more destructive climate extremes, more economic disruption, and catastrophic impacts on communities and ecosystems.

So what does the science say our 2035 climate target should be? And what will it take to get the strongest possible target locked in?

In this one-hour webinar held on Thursday 7 August 2025, we unpacked why Australia’s 2035 climate target matters, how a strong target can pave the way forward, and what you can do to help influence this moment.

Watch the recording below to hear from Climate Councillor and independent economist Nicki Hutley, Advocacy Director Alex Engel-Mallon and CEO Amanda McKenzie, in a conversation chaired by our Research Director Dr. Martin Rice, to better understand how we can secure the strongest possible 2035 climate target.

Outright lies, a whole steaming pile of them, helped Trump swing this election. From baseless claims about immigrants eating pets, to conspiracies about scientists creating hurricanes, the web of lies surrounding Trump convinced enough voters to clinch him the Presidency.

Now many of those tactics are being deployed here in Australia too. Taking several leaves out of Trump’s playbook, Australians are being attacked with a flood of weaponised disinformation designed to pollute our politics, swing votes and stall climate action. And it’s only going to increase in the run up to our election.

But we know how to fight this.

Watch our webinar recording to hear about our upcoming election strategy and what the US vote and disinformation means for climate action in Australia.

Over the past year, Australia has experienced a new era of federal climate action, with the Australian Labor Party (ALP) beginning to implement its election commitments. The Climate Council has been pushing hard to strengthen each policy and to build momentum for stronger future action.

But recently, we’ve seen coal mine approvals, the go-ahead for fracking in the Northern Territory, and not enough money in the budget for climate action. And despite hard-fought progress, the changes locked into our climate system due to decades of delay, of which Australia has been a large contributor, place our communities, ecosystems and species at risk. We need to act faster.

Catch up on this discussion with Senator David Pocock, Dr Jennifer Rayner and Dr Simon Bradshaw, facilitated by Climate Council CEO, Amanda McKenzie.
