The Federal Government has released legislation for a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard for new Aussie cars, utes and vans in Parliament. This is an important way to cut petrol bills and clean up climate pollution from our vehicles in one go – a win-win.

While the legislation has been released, it hasn’t yet been voted on in Parliament.

Some of the biggest car companies – Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi and Mazda – want to pump the brakes. They don’t mind that Aussies are paying too much for petrol-guzzling, high polluting cars because that’s how they make their profits.

Our friends at Big Auto’s Aussie Dumping Ground expose their dirty truths.

In 2020, Western Sydney was the hottest place on earth at a sweltering 50°C*. But Western Sydney is not alone – places right around the country are clocking scorching temperatures and breaking records time and time again.

So what is it about our urban places that make them so hot and what can we do to design a cooler future in the face of climate change? Emma Bacon, from the non profit Sweltering Cities, and Sydney City Planner Sam Austin, join us and provide solutions to heat proofing our homes against increasing temperatures driven by climate change.

Check out our new heat map tool to find out how hot your suburb could be by 2090 if we don’t take the necessary action needed this decade.

A big focus area for the Cities Power Partnership (CPP) this year has been transport – a large and growing source of harmful carbon pollution in Australia.

This year the CPP has continued to support councils in electrifying their fleets. In April, over 120 elected officials joined the CPP’s call for the Federal Government to legislate fuel efficiency standards to supercharge the country’s supply of affordable electric vehicles.

Here’s a sneak peak of some of the remarkable strides made by local governments in electrifying their fleets this year, demonstrating the outstanding work and commitment by local councils embracing EVs as solutions in efforts to reduce transport emissions.
